Notes on 'These Strange Days 2020- Vancouver/Brisbane/NYC'. The music was written by Allan Luke in Brisbane during the pandemic lockdown in April 2020 for his friends in NYC, painter Naomi Silverman and writer Joel Spring. We used Naomi's paintings of the NYC lockdown and the Australian bushfires for inspiration. Composer Jay Cloidt added the bass in his Oakland, California studio. The first song - 'these strange days' - lyrics were composed by Australian poet Bill Green in Bathurst, New South Wales and Allan added the vocal with Bill's words in his Brisbane studio. Meanwhile, in Vancouver, Canadian singer/songwriter Norine Braun sat with the music, composing and recorded an original second song - '2020' - over the same guitar/bass passages during her self-quarantine.  We've  remixed the two songs together as a dialogue - with two voices, two experiences and two standpoints talking at, to and with each other.

Bill Green's lyrics for 'These Strange Days'

THESE STRANGE DAYS

Strange days in New York

The light it is fading
& everyone's inside themselves
looking out

The traffic all is muted
the streets almost empty
a siren sounding somewhere
& the streetlights coming on

What is happening to my city

What is happening to our life

Strange days

Here everything is turning blue
& yes we're thinking of you
in other times & other days

You two there in New York
& us a world away

Alone together all of us
in these strange days

What is happening to my city

What is happening to our life

So keep the homefires burning

Keep the lights on

Listen to the yearning
in these strange, strange days

Norine Braun's lyrics for '2020'

2020
Staring out my window
So quiet every day
Longing for the future
I haven't much to say

We've battened down the hatches
These fleeting winds may stay
Brushing off the danger
We don't want to live this way

Trust in love we are together
All the paths we walked forever
Never mind the point of view
We give the rest a truce

Staring out my window
So quiet every day
Longing for the future
I haven't much to say

Deep down we're going
Know the jail
Weaving in the streams above
Watching out
Is there enough?
Never wading in too light
Are the forces right?

And if I get it
I'll treat it wise
And if I miss it
I know it's eyes
Every fire in you
Every sight of you
I feel ambitious for the day
I try and fight it
Fade away

Norine Braun Vancouver, British Columbia

Her signature funky folk-blues sound simply cannot be matched. Best listened to as loud as your neighbours will tolerate. Abortmag

Her music sounds like the union of Nick Cave with Patti Smith & City and Colour deep in the Canadian forests.
